Concert Riff Raff

Here Are Some Recent Reviews & Videos of our Boys performances!
On Monday night, thousands of Canberrans flocked to AIS Arena for what was promised to be a production of New York proportions, Lady Gaga's Monster Ball.

"The foyer was packed with 15-year-olds wearing too little and 30-somethings who hadn’t been out in a while.

Lady Gaga’s long time friends Semi Precious Weapon were given the challenging task of supporting the iconic artist.

The four piece pulled out all the stops, setting the stage alive with their modern take on dirty glam rock. Their mentality was ‘act like a rock star, get treated like one,’ catching the audience off guard and encouraging their chants for Gaga as a back-beat to their songs.

Lead singer Justin Tranter showed-off his trashy show style, completing a full outfit change on stage, on his back, stripping down to merely a g-string and nude fishnets.

Semi Precious Weapons eventually had Gaga’s fans screaming for them and singing along to songs never before heard in Canberra. Lyrics like their infectious self-titled track, 'I can’t pay my rent but I’m fucking gorgeous' could be heard echoing through the arena.

Tranter announced that the band are long-time friends of Gaga and have performed with her since 2003, earning them instant cred amongst punters." - outincanberra.com.au

"I’m not going to lie to you, I’ve never heard of Semi-Precious Weapons, the opening band for the night. Though apparently they have been performing with Lady Gaga since 2006, and have no aversion to telling parents where they can stick it for bringing their 5 year old children to a concert with explicit language and raunchy costumes." - Tahnee Brahim

"Hours before the doors are due to open, the hallways of the Entertainment Centre are completely packed – skinny, wide-eyed gay boys with lightning strikes drawn across their faces and high school girls jacked up on pink vodka cruisers and psyching up to elbow their way to the front if necessary. The implication is clear – it’s fucking Gaga time. New York punks Semi-Precious Weapons play a brief but bracing opening set, spitting champagne and sneering come-ons" - Rave Magazine

Justin and Cole on NOVA FM Talk SemiPreciousWorld.Com!

Justin and Cole met with music editor and journalist Jordana Borensztajn of Nova FM for an interview, one that covered Pictionary, Lady Gaga, and yours truly: Semi Precious World! Can we just say first off, thank you SO much to Jordana for using two of our questions.  It really means a lot to us that you did that.  For those of you that don't know, Jordana tweeted that she was going to interview our boys and wanted to see if any fans had questions they'd like to ask, so naturally Jawsh and I wanted to make sure they were aware how much we love them.  And also, if any of the personal youtube songs were going to be on the album.  Jawsh and I seriously listen to those songs on the daily, so that was a pretty big deal to us.

Check out the videos from the interview, Justin and Cole mention Weapon Wednesday and Fab Friday which is ironic because Jawsh and I were so swamped we couldn't get those accomplished this week (forgive us...please)
and for anyone who reads this, follow Jordana on Twitter, she's an absolute sweetheart.

CMJ Talks Semi Precious Weapons

Story by: Amelia Trask
Glam rockers Semi Precious Weapons, who are currently on tour with Lady Gaga in Europe, will continue as support on the upcoming North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour. The comprehensive dates, which kick off stateside in Montreal on June 28, will take the band clear through September, filling up its summer with constant shows., "The Monster Ball is a fucking event," frontman Justin Tranter crowed about the tour. “The fact that Gaga is cool enough to have a filthy, balls-to-the-wall, glamorous rock 'n' roll band open the show makes her brilliant pop extravaganza even more intense."

Semi Precious Weapons will also be releasing an LP in June (exact date and title TBD), but if you can't wait that long for some new tunes, the band's most recent self-titled EP is available now via iTunes. All tracks were executive produced by Lady Gaga, and produced by Jack Joseph Puig (Green Day, Beck). The new record definitely vibes with the band's party persona. "We are so proud of our debut album that we could puke," says Tranter. "Working with Jack Joseph Puig to make a real rock 'n' roll record that people can dance and/or fuck to is all we ever wanted. 'You Love You' has guitar solos, champagne, sing-a-longs and two ballads no one is going to expect. But most importantly it's a rock 'n' roll album you can put on at a party."

The band's new video for "Semi Precious Weapons," the single from the forthcoming full-length, premiered last week on its MySpace page. The band also makes a special appearance in Lady Gaga and Beyonce's much-discussed "Telephone" video.

Storytime With SPW

Sometimes you learn the most about artists when they aren't talking strictly about their music; sometimes it's best to just give 'em a topic and let them ramble for a bit. It's in the act of storytelling that their actual personalities come through.

With that in mind, we asked Semi Precious Weapons to tell us some tales, specifically about two of their most beloved towns: New York and Las Vegas.

First up, we get some fear and loathing in Las Vegas, as frontman Justin Tranter recounts the time the band played a gig at a "prejudiced murder bar" in Sin City where the local patrons, all of whom were, in the words of Justin Tratner, "born in that bar," were none too pleased about Justin's fierce footwear. You'd think that a bunch of guys as theatrical and fabulous as Semi Precious Weapons would have no problem getting along in the cabaret capital, but alas, it simply wasn't the case.

In the second Semi Precious interview, we hear all about the band's adventures in their hometown of New York City. This one concerns the band's gig opening for Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall. The band figured, hey, this NYC, we're gonna bring it. Bringing it included spitting water at the crowd, pouring champagne on the crowd, running up and down the aisles of the storied venue ... the usual. Everyone thought these hijinks were HIGH-larious, save the New York City fire marshal.

You'll have to check out the exclusive MTV.com videos to see how these things worked themselves out. Semi Precious Weapons' self-titled EP is available now. And check out some epic photos of Semi Precious Weapons pics here.

Semi Precious Weapons on 2dayFM!

Here are a few vids from SPW's Interview with Australian Radio Station 2DayFM

Fab Friday Features: Tommy Cole

We're really excited about this Fab Friday because it's our first Fab Friday that we've interviewed! Plus this person is SO fabulous, well, you have no idea.

First, a little bit of back story for those of you who may not have the pleasure of knowing who Tommy Cole is... By Tommy Cole!

"I'm Tommy. Some of you may know me as Tommy Couture. I am a hyper-creative individual with with a passion for fashion, design, photography, retail, rock stars and cocktails. I have managed to turn all of these passions into a successful career with hardly any formal education or training. In 2003 I moved to NYC from Boston at the eager age of 23. I immediately started working at boutiques in SoHo and going out at night, camera in hand, to shoot the characters of the downtown club scene. In 2004 I met my lover, fashion design mastermind Roy Caires. Roy taught me how to sew and in early 2005 we started a line together called This Old Thing?, a collection made of reconstructed vintage garments. The looks were over the top, abstract, inside out/upside down, ripped & shredded works of wearable art. It was around this time that make-up artist Jenny Brown introduced us to a singer named Justin Tranter. Our first (and only) This Old Thing? fashion show was the opening act for Justin's final performance as a solo artist, he was ready to rock & roll. A few weeks later Justin called to inform us that his band was established, they were to be called Semi Precious Weapons, and that we better start working on some looks for the first show. The vision was clear from the very beginning: glamour, madness, FAME and fashion. Photo's were snapped, clothes were made and the party was non-stop. In February 2007 Roy and I opened our first boutique, Alter, in Greenpoint- Brooklyn. After a successful first year we opened a second Alter location (directly across the street from the first) one for men, the other for women. As of today we are a thriving multi-brand boutique, stocking brands from all over the USA, Canada and Europe."

SPWW: We all love using your "garage glam" terms. I believe kunt has become an everyday staple. Is their a definition for the term carol? And are there any other fierce terms you'd like to introduce?

TC: Those "vocabulary" vid's on youtube were done very, very late one night back in September 2007 and I think they're hysterical. I was just rambling on and being silly, and three years later people are still talking about it. The definitions are endless! Carol? Not telling...

SPWW: Justin says you're the man that "put him in heels." do you remember when you woke up and thought, HEELS!!

TC: We would do fittings with Justin in our studio 'till all hours, practicing fashion stunts and looks for their shows. One night We slid a pair of fire engine red, high heel boots (womens size 12) on him and it was just right. Tights, heels and outrageous tops were the uniform from then on.

SPWW: What were some of your favorite or more outrageous outfits that you created for Justin?

TC: There were MANY looks that I am fond of. I think my favorite might be the one we created and shot for the original cover of We Love You in July 2007. The look was layers of shredded athletic t-shirt jersey, a bra on backwards and a cummerbund, with black tights and red high heel boots- with that platinum blonde hair and his shocked expression the look is burnt in my head for ever. Very simple but had a lasting impression, and was easy for fans to emulate.

SPWW: As an aspiring designer with no formal training I think its really fucking inspiring to see how much you've accomplished already. What's some advice you can give other weapons that have big dreams and aspirations?

TC: If you want to do something right you have to do it yourself. Learn how to sew. Learn how to sell. Take pictures and smile pretty. Life skills.

SPWW: Are there any celebs out there that you personally think look busted? Or look like they have some problem H?

TC: HAHA!! Problem H!! busted celebrities? I don't pay much attention to celebs, and hating on people is a bore.

SPWW: Could you make 29 tops in 29 minutes?

TC: Yes, I'll make 29 tops in 29 minutes. That song is genius... It was a birthday gift to me a few years ago.

SPWW: What's next for Tommy Couture? What should the world be looking out for?

TC: What's next? Well, we're plotting a Pop-Up retail shop with Lady Starlight & the Alter Boys in NYC for 4 days next month (April 2010) so stay tuned! Fashion WILL happen!

Thanks again to Mr. Couture for taking the time to answer my questions and for being such a FABULOUS Friday.  Make sure you visit his boutique Alter in person or on the web and check out their fabulous selection of clothing and accessories (it's seriously the best).

MTV Australia Interviews Semi Precious Weapons

They’ve been compared to Queen and AC/DC, are renowned for their unique fashion sense, and are currently supporting one of the biggest artists on the planet – Lady Gaga.

Semi Precious Weapons’ Frontman Justin Tranter and bassist Cole Whittle tell MTV all about their debut album ‘We Love You,’ and reveal the secrets behind their best pal’s ‘Poker Face.’

MTV: Describe Semi Precious Weapons

Justin:
Really filthy rock n' roll

Cole: Unruly and quite sexual

Justin: Guitar solos, champagne, you know the important things.

MTV: Your debut album ‘We Love You’ was executively produced by Gaga. Tell us about it.

J:
We’ve been friends with her for so long and always talked, artistic and fashion ideas together and this was the first time anyone put a label on it.

C: It’s little violent. It sounds like if you kidnap Marilyn Monroe and threw her in a metal trash can with the sex pistols and a bunch of junk yard dogs and shook it up and poured some Voove in there, and then threw it of the bridge. That’s what it sounds like.

J: There’s a lot of party rock n roll sings and also a big orchestra ballad too.

C: Any kind of sex you wanna have you can do it to this record, married sex, awful awful bar sex, and romantic teenage sex.

MTV: You’re supporting Gaga on her ‘Monster Ball’ tour, but when she was first starting out she was supporting you guys. Tell us about that.

J:
The first show we played with Gaga there was probably 12 people there and it was in a disgusting bar on the lower east side of New York city, but we were all really convinced at that point that we were superstars even though there was only 12 people, we thought we were the most popular people in the world.

MTV: Is it surreal being back on the road with her?

J:
Being with the girl we love and who we’ve known forever and to step on stage with her every night and looking at these tens of thousands of people she’s letting us harass before she goes on stage, it's surreal, it's amazing, we’re pretty honoured.

MTV: Tell us about the real Lady Gaga.

C:
I think the main thing that everyone in the world needs to realise is that she is the highest level of musician that you can be. She can sing her ass off, she writes amazing songs, she plays piano.

J: She’s really really loyal, to her friends and her family, for us. When she first opened for us, she got so altered, if you will, that she left her keyboard stand and a 6 inch stripper heel at the venue.

C: So we took them home and she called us and had to come pick them up.

J: That’s when we knew that we’d be friends forever. When you leave only one stripper heel at the venue, you’re my friend for life.

MTV: And tell us about the jewelry line you’ve created?

J:
I started making jewelry as band merchandise because we were broke and didn’t have a record, and didn’t have t-shirts, so I started making these gun and heart necklaces. The band logo is a gun and a heart, so i made these heart necklaces to sell at our first show ever and it blew up and people loved them and then luckily it kind of ended up paying for our lives, the band would sit there making jewelry all day long, we shipped over like 200,000 pieces of jewelry, but it paid for us to make music and record.

It was the most amazing accident. Although it caused us a lot of work. And yes we do plan to release it here in Australia. It’s called Fretty, f****d up and pretty, like the band, it will take over the whole world!

Concert Riff Raff

It's Thursday. What does that mean? Absolutely nothing.  So here is some concert riff raff for ye.

"We watched the opening act, Semi Precious Weapons, who were very eccentric to say the least and probaly a great fit to open for Lady Gaga. The lead male singer in the band was even wearing high heels and a dress. They were quite entertaining and full of energy which got me even more excited for the show to begin." - Mary Toteff

___________________________________________________

"Semi Precious Weapons opened the show. I've only heard of these guys by name, and Gaga used to open for them YEARS ago when she was a teenager performing in clubs for the first time. The band itself was full of flamboyant members, with the main singer wearing no pants, stocking and heels, which at one point he REMOVED on stage to change into some new clothes. They were pretty entertaining to watch, and the music itself actually wasn't too bad. They sang thrashy style rock, i'll definitely check out their album." - Anomalyx
 ___________________________________________________

"A band from New York-fucking City opened for her, called Semi Precious Weapons. They were fucking awesome. And they said the word ‘fucking’ a lot.

Needless to say I kinda fell in love with the lead singer.

Oh he’s HOT. And so BAD.

He was wearing these glittery boots and asked the crowd:

“Sydney, do you like my shoes?”

And we cheered.

And he was like ‘I said, SYDNEY, do you like my fucking shoes?”

And we screamed louder.

Oh I love." - Tasnim

SPW Opening the Monster Ball in Birmingham

Rene Cervantes of Mtv Writes:

"New York City neo-glam rockers Semi Precious Weapons have to been seen to be believed. Listening to SPW tracks like "Magnetic Baby," from their self-titled EP (released this January), is only part of the experience. True, you get to hear the snarling, bratty, punky glam rock, full of nods to David Bowie, T. Rex and The Stooges, but inhaling the entire sensory splendor of Semi Precious Weapons? The glam Gestalt, if you will? Therein likes the true power. Impossibly fit, head-to-toe glam front man Justin Tranter is a born rock star. And true rock stars all know how to do one thing: work it. Check out the shots from this exclusive MTV photo shoot, and stare in wonder at the various flirty and fangs-out poses Tranter rocks.

It's a sense of extreme, eye-catching style that the band share with one of their closest musical colleagues, Lady Gaga. Truth be told, Semi Precious Weapons gave Gaga one of her earliest breaks when they had her open for them years back. On her way to the top of the charts/world, Gaga's returned the favor by having Semi Precious Weapons open for her and putting them in her "Telephone" video — even if she did kill them off. As Justin Tranter told MTV News, "We pretty much owe our lives to Lady Gaga!" That's friendship for ya.

Anyway, enough about Gaga; more about checking out photos of these dangerously stylish dudes."

NME Talks Filthy Glamour With Justin Tranter

"Before Semi Precious Weapons moved to New York or even met, we all dreamed that the city would be like it was in the Warhol documentaries.  And it just wasn’t.  It was more like girls wishing they were in Sex and the City and dudes swearing that they hate The Strokes when they look and sound just like them.  We moved there and hooked up, but the whole place was just boring us to tears, so we said, “Fuck it, instead of complaining about the New York party scene, let’s just start a fucking trophy party band and create our own one.”
Around this time we met Lady Gaga, through Lady Starlight, who was an acquaintance of mine.  She told us about Gaga and got her to open for us, and she came and was just amazing.  She and Starlight lit their hair on fire, they stripped, they broke everything and they were wasted.  It was beyond fucking fabulous, so I came up with the name Filthy Glamour for us all.  There are two parts to it – our sound is harder and filthier than glam rock, so firstly I thought, “I’ll just go for Filthy Glamour”, and then when people say, “Well, what is Filthy Glamour? I’ll say, “It sounds like Dirty Fucking Showbiz.”

But at that point it was still very difficult – we were still on our own and it was hard for us to get booked in normal music venues. Our music was fun and we look… well, I’ve been dressing like this since I was 15… but we all look weird.  I think people just didn’t know who to put us on a bill with, and as a result we started playing these dance parties in places like Coco 66 in Brooklyn, and downstairs at Webster Hall.  Our music is nothing like dance, but it was just easier for us to play a 30-minute set in the middle of a DJ party than to play a show with four hipster bands.
That was a beautiful mistake, because all the dance parties were fucking packed with people there just to drink and get laid – but then they accidentally see a band!  So we ended up building this scene out of nothing and creating a world of our own.  We became superstars of this world that probably only 1,000 people knew about.
There were all these different people who we started playing with, who have become a part of Filthy Glamour.  A girl named Tokyo Diva – she’s hip-hop, but it’s really fucking filthy and glamorous.  There’s another character called Breedlove.  His fashion and music motto is ‘dress to depress’, and he wears the most ill-fitting sweatpants anyone could ever wear and these dirty T-shirts with his own face painted on them.  The band he’s got is sick – if you heard them and didn’t know who they were you’d be positive it was 1977.

Nico Vega fit into the Dirty Fucking Showbiz world too.  They’re a three-piece with a girl singer.  She’s a much different type of glamour than I am though – she performs barefoot, but as a band they look unbelievable and she sings her fucking ass off.  And then there’s another band outside of LA called The Ringers, who we’ve brought to New York a couple times.  They’re Iggy Pop meets kids’ cartoons! They’re fucking ridiculous. Darian Darling is a blogger and personality who’s a central part of the whole scene too – look her up.  And as far as the fashion is concerned there’s a store in Brooklyn called Alter that’s kind of a home-base for Filthy Glamour.  It’s cheap, it’s exciting, and it’s ridiculous.  Much like the music.
Saying all that, I don’t think the New York Press is really ready for Filthy Glamour yet.  I do think the kids are though. In fact, I know that for sure.  When we went back and played Radio City with Gaga recently, we filmed a video at The Trash Party and it was amazing.  It was the filthiest thing ever… there are actually people fucking in the video, I mean, you can’t see penetration, but it was full on.  I guess what I’m saying is that it’s really fucking weird and really amazing that even though we’re away on tour, this filthy world we started back in New York – full of important characters just going for it – is still thriving. "

Weapon Wednesday Feat. Emma Louise

Today's Weapon Wednesday features Deadly Weapons, Emma Louise and Sydney Magnetic.   Check out her fab letter and her fab SPW inspired art!

"My name is Emma Louise and it's pretty safe to say that before Semi Precious Weapons, my life was incredibly boring.

I live in St. Louis and had no idea who they were until maybe 8:00 on January 7, 2010. the night i went to see lady gaga with my best friend in the world.  Talk about looking "shocked" when Justin Tranter changes clothes onstage and sends champagne to the audience. But we were the best kind of shocked, the "holy shit this is what we have been waiting for all our lives" kind of shocked. Of course, the night only got more awesome when Lady Gaga took the stage and rocked our worlds, but neither of us could forget the filthy glaMOUR we had been introduced to.

We had the next day off from school, and I spent the whole day listening to Semi Precious Weapons on Youtube. A friend lent me the "We Love You" CD and my world was rocked. Permanently.

So when I needed a new gym bag, I seized the opportunity and made the most kuntFABULOUS tote bag in the entire world.

It's pretty easy to make at home yourself, even! Just find a fab picture of someone (or two people) who is incredibly fabulous and open it with photoshop. make it black and white and then print it out on tough paper like cardstock. Cut out the black parts with an x-acto knife, tape it down to your totebag or whatever fabulous thing you are spray painting, and spray paint the fuck out of it! i used fluorescent pink spray paint which is always the best color. and then you can add words like "glam and gorgeous" if you want super glaMOUR.

My best friend and i are such glamorpusses that when we found out about Weapon Wednesday on SPWworld, we had a picture of Justin Tranter developed to take a picture with so you can see our gorg. faces. Then we made this video (which was retweeted by Semi Precious Weapons themselves!) of us putting on makeup and looking magic.

xo,

Emma and Sydney's video started a trend among others and SPW Fan Performance art is running rampant on youtube -- Check out these videos of Darian Darling and Breedlove performing to SPW:

Really Great Lullaby Cover

Making of SPW's "Semi Precious Weapons"

Download Justin's Playlist! Courtesy of ShockHound

Yesterday ShockHound.com posted the Semi Precious Weapons Playlist so now YOU can listen to what they're listening to! Check it out!

"My glamorous theme for this playlist is blonde women," explains Semi Precious Weapons frontman Justin Tranter. He knows well of what he speaks — not only is Tranter something of a blonde androgyne himself, but his glam-damaged, NYC-based band is currently opening for Lady GaGa on her epic Monster Ball tour. Read on to find out which blondes this gentleman prefers...

1. Hole — Violet
I don't care what anyone thinks of Courtney Love, this song is fucking awesome.

2. Miranda Lambert — Dead Flowers
Yes, yes, yes. We are a filthy rock band, but we love country music.

3. Lady GaGa — Dance In The Dark
I watch her open her show with this song every night. It's so good I could die.

4. Marilyn Monroe — Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend
Listen to it, but you should watch [the film], too. Legends. Icons.

5. Dolly Parton — Stairway To Heaven
Dolly has to be on the list, so it might as well be her Led Zep cover.

6. Ladyhawke — My Delirium
We toured with Ladyhawke, and during this song we'd come out and dry hump her.

7. Lil' Kim —Custom Made
She was blonde for this record. Promise.

8. Fleetwood Mac — Dreams
Stevie Nicks is one of my favorite songwriters of all time.

9. Missing Persons — Words
Lead singer Dale Bozzio was giving Pink/Blonde early 80's magic.

10. Semi Precious Weapons — Semi Precious Weapons
I'm not a blonde woman, but I am a blonde genderless sea creature.

11. Blondie — Heart Of Glass
This song obvs has to be the finish to this playlist.

"It's still called Monster Ball, but it's more of a musical and less of a concert,” Lady Gaga said in a February interview with KIIS-FM’s Ryan Seacrest. “It has a New York theme, it's a story, and the story is that me and my friends are in New York and we're going to the Monster Ball, and we get lost."

Critics around the world raved about the first leg of The Monster Ball Tour, which Gaga described as “the first-ever pop-electro opera.” The Sun called it “breathtaking stuff” and “the best live show you will see this year,” while London’s Independent wrote: “Gaga’s got it, which is why, right now, the whole pop world wants to take a ride on her disco stick.”  Writing about her show at Radio City Music Hall, the New York Times noted that “her Monster Ball tour always provided something worth a snapshot: a sci-fi tableau, perhaps, or a skimpy, glittery costume. The more her image gets around, the better Lady Gaga does.”

Live Nation Global Touring is the International tour promoter and producer for The Monster Ball under the direction of Arthur Fogel, CEO Global Touring and Chairman – Global Music Live Nation who said: “Lady Gaga has set out to revolutionize pop music and with her new production she continues to do exactly that.  We’re thrilled to take The Monster Ball to fans around the world.”

Lady Gaga is touring in support of The Fame Monster, which was released on November 23rd, 2009, by Streamline/Konlive/Cherrytree/Interscope. The album is the follow-up to 2008’s Grammy Award-winning album The Fame, which spawned the No. 1 singles “Just Dance” and “Poker Face.” Combined, The Fame and The Fame Monster have sold 10 million albums worldwide, while Lady Gaga’s five singles, “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Lovegame,” “Paparazzi,” and “Bad Romance,” have sold in excess of 30 million copies total. The video for “Bad Romance” has racked up more than 125 million online views. Lady Gaga recently premiered the video for her new single “Telephone,” featuring Beyoncé, on the E! television network and entertainment website VEVO.
