December 8th - The Day Music Died

December 8th, 1980 and 2004 saw one of the greatest songwriters die on the streets of New York City. It was John Lennon. The other, one of the most coolest shred guitarist known and who we will never get to know how big of an influence he would have been, the late Dimebag Darrell.

I was fortunate to have a conversation with Nile guitarist Karl Sanders about this day. I asked him, what was it like on the road after Dimebag was killed. Karl's demeanor changed and went silent. He said calmly, "It was very nerve-racking because even when fans come up behind you for an autograph. I would jump because you thought you were next to take a bullet. Being on tour used to be so safe." It took Karl a year to see things return to almost normal.

Musicians are not suppose to die in a hail of bullets, but live to old age being the mentors and inspirations to millions who listen to their music. Instead we are left with a void and ask ourselves, "What if..."

John Lennon and Dimebag Darrell may you both rest in peace and know that you are missed and your music and talent will forever live on.
