Semi Precious After Parties!

Semi Precious Weapons, the band opening for Lady Gaga, has a curious history with the flamboyant mega-pop star. At one time, she used to open forthem.

"Yes, she was," says Semi Precious Weapons singer Justin Tranter. "Thank God. It changed my life. Then she moved to L.A. to make the biggest record of the decade."

Though her evolving persona of carefully constructed theatrical dance-pop contrasted sharply with their brand of trashy, uninhibited glam-rock, they felt an instant connection.

"Gaga has been a huge fan of ours since she was about 19 years old," Tranter says. "So, she was a big fan of ours back in New York City, when no one knew who we were besides her. She started opening for us in New York in about 2007.

"I think we share the same aesthetic, though it's musically very different," he says. "We're both very visual, we're very over the top, very filthy. But we're very honest musicians -- the four of us (Semi Precious Weapons) met in music school. Much like Gaga -- even though it's a very visual over-the-top performance -- we still take the music very, very seriously."

The band began in 2006, after Tranter and his bandmates chucked everything they learned in music school, and struck out for the bright lights of New York City -- and were disappointed by what they found.

"We had been in music school and were taking music so seriously, over-intellectually," Tranter says. "So, we tried to get together and just write songs that would make us happy, and were fun. In terms of New York City, we moved there thinking it would be like Max's Kansas City (an infamous '60s-'70s nightclub) in an Andy Warhol documentary. It was actually much more like behind the scenes in 'Sex and the City.' I'm not going to make fun of it, but that was not what we were looking for.

"All the other bands in New York were taking themselves too seriously, and everything was so boring. So, we started this band and convinced all these DJs and promoters in New York to let us play at their parties. That's how kids like Gaga did hear of us, because all of a sudden we started playing at the coolest parties in New York, where rock bands weren't playing."

Now that the band is playing in sold-out arenas all over the country, it might be tempting to put those sweaty nights of wild abandon behind them. But probably not -- Semi Precious Weapons not only opens for Gaga, it also hosts an after-party at a club in every city. The after-party in Pittsburgh will be at the Altar Bar, starting at 9:30 p.m.

"Gaga doesn't do afterparties -- it's a security risk," explains Tranter, who will DJ the afterparty. "I spin everything from Metallica to Beyonce to Guns 'N Roses to Gaga (of course). There's lots of champagne poured all over the audience, and lots of people barely dressed." - Pittsburghlive.com

Guest of a Guest Talks SPW After Party!

What do Semi Precious Weapons and Jamie Foxx have in common? Probably nothing except for that fact they they were both hamming it up last night at SPiN Hollywood. The band held a private after party for night one of their two-day L.A. stint with the Monster Ball Tour at the new, trendy ping pong social club where guests could get in some paddle action over cocktails. Well, that is if Foxx let them take a turn.
He was a total animal at the baseline for most of the night, nearly wetting himself when he walked in t
o find that the party involved ping pong and ran back out to his car to fetch his paddle.

Although it was portrayed as some loft-like space on the roof a big building overlooking the city in an episode of "Entourage" a few weeks ago, the real ping pong club is located off of the lobby in the Mondrian.  Despite the fictionalized aspects of trendy new spot, Soo Yeon Lee, the fierce Asian who played John Stamos' ping pong trainer really is a pro at SPiN, and was there kicking ass and taking names while sporting some fishnets and heels. Yeah, she's hardcore like that.

When the Semi Precious Weapons boys rolled in around 1am with their ever-present pack of wild child ladies with a penchant for flashing, Justin Tranter kind of stole Foxx's spotlight as that hot bitch stomped in wearing silver stiletto boots and more eyeliner than Taylor Momsen. From there it kind of turned into what you might expect from the glam rock brigade. You know, dancing atop furniture in five-inch heels, champagne spraying, dry humping on ping pong tables, and some nip slips.

Semi Precious Weapons Afterparty: Boston

Check out what Stuff Magazine: Boston had to say about the rockin' SPW After Party:

"What I learned last night: I really can't party like a rock star after all. I wore Z Cavaricci pants in middle school. Cocktails at Woodward are dangerous.

Last night, the Ames Hotel hosted a private after party with the Semi Precious Weapons, who opened for Lady Gaga at her TD Garden show.

The ultra glam rockers arrived fashionably late but made up for it for it by infusing the place with electric and contagious energy, throwing one hell of a fucking after party. I'll refrain from filling you in on how late we partied till (heaven forbid I get anyone in trouble here), but let's just say it was an incredibly unique evening/morning in our typically stodgy town.
Frontman Justin Tranter, played it up for the crowd with his wacky dancing, DJ-ing and nipple-exposing gestures. There was also a little leg kicking and bar-top dancing going on. Although totally entertaining and sort of hard to take your eyes off of, I was WAY more interested in hanging out with Dan Crean the Drummer and Shaun Hoffman, one of their tour managers. As it turns out, we were chums back in elementary school and junior high (also known as the penultimate breeding ground for most future rock stars thanks to raging hormones, pre-pubescent isolation, and constant sexual tension with members of the opposite sex), and it was SO FUCKING AWESOME to see them again! They were both sweet as pie then, and are still sweet as pie now. I was happy to find them unaffected by their newfound fabulous lifestyles (their ability to rage like a rock star at a killer afterparty notwithstanding). I also learned that although I was "nice" and "cool" as a kid, apparently I was also a bit if a snob, and Dan revealed that he was jealous of my super slick Z Cavaricci pants I sported with the sort of pride a frequent shopper of Contempo Casuals had back then. And yes, they were always pegged.

After about 7 cocktails, I started doing that thing I do when I'm tipsy: I hug everyone in sight and tell them repeatedly how much I love them. Yeah, I'm that girl. But truly, who doesn't love a happy drunk? After telling both Shaun and Dan how proud I was to see them both rockin' life, I grabbed my Urban Daddy and split. Watching the room spin is never fun. Even when you're partying with rock stars.

And while I may not be able to party like a rock star but after finding my bar tab (crushed into a ball at the bottom of my purse) this morning, I certainly can adopt one of the band's mantras: I can't pay my rent but I'm fucking gorgeous. Words to live by. Thanks, guys." - By
