Suriya's Maatraan an espionage thriller

Suriya's latest movie Maatraan is making waves and grabbing attention all over south. Maatraan is touted to become Suriya's biggest release till date. Right from the day the shooting of the film commenced, there was a tough competition among the distributors to acquire the rights of this film at any cost. The Telugu distribution rights were sold to Bellamkonda Suresh's Multi Dimensional Films for  17 crores.
Maatraan is directed and co-written by K. V. Anand and scripted by writers Subha. Suriya portray's two different roles in the film. Maatraan has the story of an espionage thriller. The film score and soundtrack is composed by Harris Jayaraj.
Several actresses were considered including Taapsee Pannu, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Sharma from Bollywood, but the movie finally ended up in the laps of Kajal Aggarwal. Thara who played Karthik's sister in Agni Natchathiram was signed on to play Suriya's mother.
Major portion of the movie was shot in the Balkan region in countries like Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia. The remaining portion is to be filmed in sets erected at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. This month the team left for US to shoot special effects scenes at the Stan Winston Studios.
Suriya has this to say about the movie "it's very different from anything that he'd done before."
