Vicky Donor collects 14 crores in its first week in India

Vicky Donor is the latest movie this year which has defied the megastar Box Office mania and emerged as a winner giving confidence to film makers to come up with interesting and fresh subjects. In its first week run the movie collected 14 crores in domestic box office leaving Housefull 2 behind which collected 12.45 crores during its third week in cinemas.
Vicky Donor is directed by Shoojit Sircar and produced by actor John Abraham. The film stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam and Annu Kapoor in the lead roles. It was released on April 20, 2012 on around 750 screens in India, and received positive response worldwide. The movie is based on the concept of sperm donation and infertility.
Despite the usual trend, John Abraham did not take up the leading role in the film: "It was a conscious decision to not act in my first production because I believe producing a film is about creating quality content that I believe in." Director Sircar suggested Khurrana, a video jockey and television host, for the role of Vicky; he was considered because he was popular among the youth, and also because the role required an authentic Punjabi characterization.
Khurrana said, "I am from Chandigarh, my Punjabi is fluent. I can read and write in it too." Khurrana turned down three film projects to play the lead in Vicky Donor. To prepare for the role, he met several medical experts and donors to understand the concept of sperm donation; a major medical consultant specializing in the field was later inducted as a medical adviser for the film. Commenting on the lead's performance, Abraham said "I am glad I cast Ayushmann in the lead. He's a complete natural, has all the trappings of a fine actor and has delivered a super performance. It doesn't seem like Vicky Donor is his first film."
Earlier this year Paan Singh Tomar and Kahaani managed to break the Box Office Jinx and proved that a movie can attract people to the theaters as well as win critical acclaim without big names. Both the movies are still running in cinemas, Kahaani in its 7th week collected 31,00,000 leading to a total domestic collection of 58 crores making it a Super Hit where as Paan Singh Tomar has made 14 crores to attain the status of Semi Box OfficeHit.
Hate Story which also released last week came third in terms of collection with a total of 9.6 crore domestic collection in its first week run. Housefull 2 which has become a Super Hit with 106 crores collection is still going strong in its third week, absense of any major releases has also helped these movies to a great extend to maintain their steady box office performance last week.
