Rockstar confirms how it defines the different versions of the GTA world.
GTA 5 will likely be set in a completely different 'universe' to previous GTA games - except for GTA 4, Rockstar has suggested.
The info comes from a Q&A last month when the developer confirmed how it cassifies the different 'universes' the GTA series occupies.
Answering a question about the referencing of characters across GTA 3 and GTA 4 the developer replied: "El Burro is referenced as he was also referenced in GTA 1, so it felt appropriate that he should cross “universes” – the “universes” are the worlds interpreted at different definitions, 2d, 3d and high definition, so we felt brands and radio / back ground characters would exist in both, but 3 dimensional characters would not.
"This is the logic (as far as it could be considered logical) behind it – so no, we don’t believe any GTA3 characters could exist in the GTA4 universe."
By Rockstar's logic the only key characters that could crossover into GTA 5 would be those from GTA 4, as well as The Episodes from Liberty City.
It sounds as if Rockstar does make fun exceptions, but those that think they spotted San Andreas character CJ in the GTA 5 announcement trailer may be out of luck.
