The year 2012 will see a series of experimental and out of the league cinema. Established filmmakers are trying their hands in 3D and period films. One of the more reputed names of Bollywood, Anurag Kashyap is also coming up with a period drama this year. The first part of his much awaited film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ will hit the theatres in May, while the second part will be released towards the end of the year.
IBNLive asked Anurag about his upcoming film.
“The film is about the gangs of Wasseypur, a small place near Dhanbad in Jharkhand. It’s a family drama which is set across three generations and six decades.”
So, are we going to see a different kind of mafia in the film?
"The film begins with the coal mafia but gradually moves away from it."
What was the inspiration behind taking up such a subject?
"Actually the quirkiness of the story attracted me. It’s an epic revenge drama. We have fictionalised the facts."
Does it have any resemblance with ‘The Godfather’?
"See, it’s not the Indian version of ‘The Godfather’. The story is completely fictionalised keeping the identities of the people and logistical elements in the mind."
Anurag also expressed pleasure about working with Manoj after a long gap, "Manoj is a brilliant actor and it’s a pleasure working with him."
Nawazuddin, a relatively lesser known face in Bollywood, is playing one of the pivotal roles in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, but Anurag has high praises for him.
“Nawaz is an extraordinary actor. You will see a lot of him this year. He is in almost every important film releasing this year, from ‘Talaash’ to ‘Shootout at Wadala’. In my opinion, his talent can be compared to Irrfan Khan. He has been in the industry since 14 years but didn’t get noticed. His natural acting is his strength.”
Rajkumar Yadav, who is playing a very important character in the film, reveals some details about the film, "It starts from 1940 when the mafia had first entered into the mining business. ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ is all about small town gangsters."
The film boasts of a more than 150 people cast which also includes the likes of Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin and Piyush Mishra.
