Everyone has a certain level of self-esteem in them. So, whenever you feel like advising or criticizing someone (and you have good intentions for doing it), do it in private, not in front of their friends, your friends or strangers.
Take them somewhere private and let it be a private conversation between the both of you. They'll be grateful that you don't scratch their dignity in front of other people.
I believe in that. And something I have always tried doing over and over again.
