MTV Australia Interviews Semi Precious Weapons

They’ve been compared to Queen and AC/DC, are renowned for their unique fashion sense, and are currently supporting one of the biggest artists on the planet – Lady Gaga.

Semi Precious Weapons’ Frontman Justin Tranter and bassist Cole Whittle tell MTV all about their debut album ‘We Love You,’ and reveal the secrets behind their best pal’s ‘Poker Face.’

MTV: Describe Semi Precious Weapons

Justin:
Really filthy rock n' roll

Cole: Unruly and quite sexual

Justin: Guitar solos, champagne, you know the important things.

MTV: Your debut album ‘We Love You’ was executively produced by Gaga. Tell us about it.

J:
We’ve been friends with her for so long and always talked, artistic and fashion ideas together and this was the first time anyone put a label on it.

C: It’s little violent. It sounds like if you kidnap Marilyn Monroe and threw her in a metal trash can with the sex pistols and a bunch of junk yard dogs and shook it up and poured some Voove in there, and then threw it of the bridge. That’s what it sounds like.

J: There’s a lot of party rock n roll sings and also a big orchestra ballad too.

C: Any kind of sex you wanna have you can do it to this record, married sex, awful awful bar sex, and romantic teenage sex.

MTV: You’re supporting Gaga on her ‘Monster Ball’ tour, but when she was first starting out she was supporting you guys. Tell us about that.

J:
The first show we played with Gaga there was probably 12 people there and it was in a disgusting bar on the lower east side of New York city, but we were all really convinced at that point that we were superstars even though there was only 12 people, we thought we were the most popular people in the world.

MTV: Is it surreal being back on the road with her?

J:
Being with the girl we love and who we’ve known forever and to step on stage with her every night and looking at these tens of thousands of people she’s letting us harass before she goes on stage, it's surreal, it's amazing, we’re pretty honoured.

MTV: Tell us about the real Lady Gaga.

C:
I think the main thing that everyone in the world needs to realise is that she is the highest level of musician that you can be. She can sing her ass off, she writes amazing songs, she plays piano.

J: She’s really really loyal, to her friends and her family, for us. When she first opened for us, she got so altered, if you will, that she left her keyboard stand and a 6 inch stripper heel at the venue.

C: So we took them home and she called us and had to come pick them up.

J: That’s when we knew that we’d be friends forever. When you leave only one stripper heel at the venue, you’re my friend for life.

MTV: And tell us about the jewelry line you’ve created?

J:
I started making jewelry as band merchandise because we were broke and didn’t have a record, and didn’t have t-shirts, so I started making these gun and heart necklaces. The band logo is a gun and a heart, so i made these heart necklaces to sell at our first show ever and it blew up and people loved them and then luckily it kind of ended up paying for our lives, the band would sit there making jewelry all day long, we shipped over like 200,000 pieces of jewelry, but it paid for us to make music and record.

It was the most amazing accident. Although it caused us a lot of work. And yes we do plan to release it here in Australia. It’s called Fretty, f****d up and pretty, like the band, it will take over the whole world!
