the Day of Shell Recruitment Day (SRD)

Hey guys,

I have received a lot of inquiries and requests on my experience during the Shell Recruitment Day (SRD) earlier this year. Now of course, I understand for those of you who have been selected to be part of the SRD, you're nervous and excited. Chill, I've been there and so I am writing this so you can have a slight overview of what to expect on that day!

But firstly, congratulations!

Anyway, one thing I must say is that, the whole freaking session took many hours! Mind you, hours! I arrived at the office by 7.30 am and got home by 5.00 p.m. But I guess it depends on your luck though, the previous day where Shell would have briefed you beforehand. You will have a specific time in the first section of the exercise, see?

So, mine started at 9.00. But I couldn't afford to arrive at 8, or 8.30. I didn't have a clue and it was better for me to come prepared, right?

Well, the first session:
During my SRD, I was one of the 8 selected participants. Apparently I had passed my first interview session with Shell a few weeks before that. Ok, back on. For the first part of the SRD, I was given a set of documents and inside consist graphs, emails, newspaper cutting etc, I think around 20 pages or so. So, you would be given approx. 1 hour and a half to go through the document.

Mind you, I was freaking nervous and to go through all of that, early in the morning and extracting key information that are going to be used during the interview session after that, dang misters!

So, after the 1 1/2 hour has ended, you would progress to the following session where two key interviewers would be questioning you on the project's progress in the area mentioned in the document (in my case, it was a fictional land called Zaban) and you would have to answer their questions by using the information that you have extracted from the documents you've read before.

And honestly, if you're able to organize facts and information in your head, this wouldn't be a problem. You know, connecting things together. So, don't worry. Just write down everything you think is important and just answer the questions asked of you.

Second session,

this is where you should score the most. Because this is where you would hold group discussion with the other participants and discuss the issues given by the assessor. In my case, it was about fund allocation by Shell to conduct a social project (I might be wrong, mind you this was several months ago) and there are a few projects that were listed on the paper. YOU and your team mate would have to decide which project to pursue and why?

Brainstorm!
Brainstorm!
Brainstorm!

But then, after that the assessor would suddenly come into the discussion and add in additional scenario. In my case, it was an earthquake that took place in Japan. So now you would have to decide do you want to use the fund to pursue the project you've identified earlier or use the fund to help the victims in Japan instead? Why why why? You must explain well.

At the end of the second session, a few selected assessors would act as journalists in a press-conference style Q&A question and each of your team mate and YOU would be asked regarding your choice.

Third session,
As for this one, it's not as hard as the 1st. Here you would be given a list of (again, If I'm not mistaken) positions in the Shell organization as Human resource, finance, etc (there 5, I couldn't recall the other 3). So, your task is to select one of the roles. After you've chosen the role (for example, I selected Human Resource) you would be given questions related to your role in the company.

Again, like the Q & A method during the 1st session, you would have to prepare well in knowing your choice and why why why?

Then, if I might recall (vaguely) they would ask you why should Shell accept YOU? I think you have the answers to that, lads. :)

So, there you go.I think that's the best I can explain and share with you. But I don't mind answering any questions in the comment section (that is, if you have any, okay? )

But Shell SRD is a unique job-interview experience, unlike many others I have attended before. You get free food, career advice and a chance to network with others in your industry. Cherish it and best of luck!

And thank you for visiting. Do check out other articles and random posts I have written in this blog.

Merci!

Anyway, here if you are nervous, just look at this picture and have a laugh!
