Stop Child Abuse

unicef

Previously, I have written a few articles on the importance of developing and nurturing the bright, young minds of today for they are the leaders of tomorrow. One can never be outrageously ignorance towards the fact that these group of young people would soon one day take over the helm of the country and that has been said, we need to provide an environment for them to grow up the best as we could to ensure that they would become the ideal leaders to lead our future.

Besides the point, I would also like to point out that the definition of "leaders of tomorrow" is not confined to just the Prime Minister, the Head of Corporations as well as various organizations but also, the head of their families - a responsible parent, leading by example and together, this group would create the necessary environment for Malaysia to be regarded as an institution both developed as well as possessing first-class mentality in raising their respective families.

I'm writing today in conjunction of Nuffnang's "Stop Child Abuse" campaign and although it comes with prizes, but I'd like to point out that it is not so much about the prizes that are offered but rather, taking the opportunity to further emphasizing on this pressing matter.

Quoting the Stars (dated 24th November, 2010):

HIGHLIGHTED at the Universal Children’s Day event on Nov 20 was the message that the public needs to be more conscious and responsible to contact the authorities and other available sources to report suspected or witnessed cases of child abuse.

The problem with Malaysians today is, are we aware of our own rights as citizens? If there's indeed one other aspect that we need to work on is indeed, the awareness campaign on our rights as citizens. For example, whenever we are stopped by policemen on the roadside, what are the things that the policemen can do and cannot do? Have we ever thought about that? For all I've heard, we are simply too willing to let the policemen inspecting the cars on their own while we know that they are only allowed to torch the flashlight into car? There are many other things in various other fields that we need to raise these sorts of awareness and that includes against child abuse.

As a child and children in general, at a very young age, they are helpless, unable to make the decisions by themselves and vulnerable. Thus, when they are subjected to abuses regardless by their parents, relatives as well as teachers at school, they would accept that the whole scenario is simply normal. But deep inside, they are emotionally disturbed and for young children to grow up with that complicated emotional lingering within them would seriously affect their growth.

A few examples that I like to share with you, my friends, please do read on.

i. Children are canned in front of the rest of the school
ii. Children are beaten by the parents which resulted bruises all over their bodies.

Just two simple examples which are quite familiar and now, allow me to elaborate.

If the students are being subjected to canning in front of the rest of their school mates, (perhaps for their wrong-doings and during the school's assembly) the teachers decided that these students should be punished and their canning would set the example of what would happen if the rest of the students are thinking of doing the same.

This act by the teachers are by no means, right at all and should be stopped completely. How would the students, at a very young age of eight? nine? be subjected to such treatments? This will be a blow into their delicate emotional space confined deep inside of them? It does not help with their growth at all and this will also instead resulting the children growing in a state of fear, and lack of confidence, which are exactly the two aspects that I would never want these young people to grow up with. As the advocate for youth, I am against this type of treatment on the students.

On the second example, perhaps discipline require that the parents be strict with their children. Of course, but I'd like to stress on the fact that as our lives have gotten so intertwine with information technology, the art of disciplining by beating up their children should be set to a minimum and instead, there should be a proper conversation between the parents and the children. In most parts that occur in our society today, the parents failed to understand their children and this has led to cases such as them running away from homes and seek freedom with their friends instead. These such cases have escalated over the years and this is the exact reason as to why I am supporting that the parents spend more time talking with their children as much as possible.

Children with a history of neglect or physical abuse are at risk of developing psychiatric problems, or a disorganized attachment style. Disorganized attachment is associated with a number of developmental problems, including dissociative symptoms, as well as anxiety, depressive, and acting out symptoms. A study by Dante Cicchetti found that 80% of abused and maltreated infants exhibited symptoms of disorganized attachment. When some of these children become parents, especially if they suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative symptoms, and other sequelae of child abuse, they may encounter difficulty when faced with their infant and young children's needs and normative distress, which may in turn lead to adverse consequences for their child's social-emotional development. Despite these potential difficulties, psychosocial intervention can be effective, at least in some cases, in changing the ways maltreated parents think about their young children. I have had the privilege of meeting up with lots of very enthusiastic youths the past couple of years, especially through my involvement with Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and also, to champion our youths alongside with other youth leaders out there who feel and think the same way as I do. Thus, I'd see the early years of a child should never be neglected and that is the time when their growth must come together with an ideal environment where the parents, the people around them and teachers at school must play their respective parts responsibly.

In 2008, 2,780 child abuse cases were reported and the figure has been gradually climbing. One can only imagine with much trepidation the number of cases that are unreported. (The Stars, November 24th, 2010)
I am writing this today not simply to voice out my dissatisfaction, but to call out to everyone to come together and reduce these kinds of abuses be put to a stop.

Have you ever seen the laughter of our children? The look on their faces when they step into the toy store? The smile they on their faces when they are watching cartoons? These are why I am willing to take action on my parts, to put child abuse into a stop.

sexually. emotionally. physically. being neglected.
any kind of abuse.together we put a stop to it.

There are many things and through many ways we can play our parts. For instance, remember the number 15999. Well, if you have ever encountered child abuse in your neighbourhood or even by your own friends and relatives, you can either talk your way in or else, dial the number the number 15999 and lodge a report.

Other than that, you can pursue projects to support this initiative (especially if you are youth leaders of your colleges, school, universities) and run a campaign to raise public's awareness on the matter.

You can also be part of the Unicef's programme. Register here. And there, you will be provided with lots of useful information and especially, on the part where you can play your parts effectively.

You can be part of change today, my friends. And my other hope for you, my dear readers, if you have children of your own, or if you are teachers, and for sake of future, if you are going to be any of these, please remember that these children look up to you for guidance, so don't spoil their views of the world, help and guide them so that one day they can become the leaders that all of us are proud of. And this said, regardless whether they are leading the entire nation, their schools, their classes or families, they are our treasure. Look after them.

As for me, stay tuned ladies and gentlemen. By next year, I will announce my latest project in supporting my initiative to stop child abuse. For now,

Thank you again for reading and spending your time here. :D

Cheerio!
